Women are increasingly turning to online and traditional medical facilitators to purchase their medicines, says, a new study shows. Viagra, the first of the three drugs to go generic, is approved by the FDA, but the market for this treatment is unregulated.
The study, which was conducted at the University of Chicago Medical School, involved more than 4,000 women who had been prescribed Viagra, or sildenafil, for erectile dysfunction for over a year. The drugs were marketed by Sanofi and Pfizer, two French drugmakers. All three companies bought generic versions of Viagra, although Sanofi did not buy the FDA approval.
Women who took the drugs and were able to buy their erectile dysfunction pills online were not affected. But they were still less than half as likely to experience an erection after sexual stimulation, the researchers say. They also found that women who used the drugs for a long time were far less likely to experience impotence. In fact, their rates of erectile dysfunction were similar for women who used the drugs as well.
“The women who were prescribed Viagra were more likely to have undergone a physical or surgical procedure, as well as have undergone surgery or chemotherapy for cancer, which may affect their erectile function,” says the study’s lead author, Dr. Michael Rosenbaum, a professor of epidemiology, and the associate director of the Institute for Menopause at the University of California, San Francisco.
In a sense, the study’s findings, said Rosenbaum, “provide strong evidence that the use of generic drugs for erectile dysfunction is a safe and effective treatment for this population.”
The researchers were cautious about the possibility that Viagra could have been used for a different reason. However, the study has been the first of its kind in the United States, where many patients have been prescribed the drug for erectile dysfunction in the hope of having a successful sexual experience. It’s possible that Viagra is a more effective treatment than Viagra, which has been approved for use in the United States for more than 60 years.
But the researchers acknowledge that this study only included women, rather than all women. They found that Viagra was more effective for women than for men, with only about 1 in 6 women reporting that they took the drug for erectile dysfunction. Viagra, the most commonly prescribed drug for erectile dysfunction, is marketed by other companies, including Pfizer.
The researchers also note that there is a small increase in the use of female sexual dysfunction medications in women as compared with men, although this is not as common as in the United States.
“This is a relatively new type of medicine and we are very cautious in the way we have evaluated women who have used these medications,” says Rosenbaum, “but we do know that they are highly effective and very safe.”
Rosenbaum’s study also includes patients who did not take Viagra or other drugs that are known to interact with sildenafil. A third of the women in the study used a drug that is used for erectile dysfunction, such as Viagra. Viagra is prescribed for other purposes, including benign prostatic hyperplasia, but its use for this purpose has not been studied.
“We think there is still a good opportunity for more research on this subject,” says Rosenbaum, adding that a similar study in Germany in 2012 looked at the use of generic versions of erectile dysfunction drugs for sexual dysfunction and showed a difference in the incidence of erectile dysfunction between men and women. A German study found that the use of erectile dysfunction drugs for erectile dysfunction was more common in women than men.
The researchers hope this study will help identify new treatment options for women who are seeking treatment for erectile dysfunction, or impotence.
